ŽSR, completion of the Žilina-Teplička marshalling yard

Today, the contract for the work on the project, known as the Žilina Node, was signed. The ŽSR project, Completion of the Žilina-Teplička marshalling yard and related railway infrastructure in the Žilina junction, is the first modernisation of a major transport hub in the history of railways.

The modernisation consists of the rebuilding of the existing railway transport route, increasing the level of technical equipment, incorporation of modern and more progressive elements, which will improve the quality and improvement of its technical parameters, safety and indicators as a whole. The entire construction is approximately 14 kilometres long in the east-west direction and 2.3 kilometres long in the north-south direction.

The value of the Žilina junction contract is EUR 323.37 million according to the contract. Of the estimated value of the contract:

  • Section 1, part of the amount of EUR 68 864 444,75 - this part will be covered by the CEF,
  • section 2 part of the amount of EUR 254 508 557,71 - OP Integrated Infrastructure and OP Slovakia.

Despite the fact that the aim of the modernisation of the railway junction Žilina is the reconstruction of the railway infrastructure, it will also bring a significant improvement of the traffic situation in the whole territory. The construction project foresees the implementation of several new elements of road infrastructure, which will have a positive impact on the traffic situation in the city of Žilina.
